Mortality rate is used as a measure to check the state of health of a given population. This is data is extremely important and used to make comparisons of death rates.

There are many factors that pose the risk of death and these include age, gender, race, occupation, income and education. It has been seen that out of all the factors, age is the biggest risk of death.

Any given population has people of different ages. If a population is termed as young, it means that there are more people in the younger age groups, while older population has more people in the older age groups. That is why it is important when taking into account mortality rate, to also take the different ages of a population. This data gives a more accurate picture of deaths across an age group and allows the assessment of the risk of death.

Age adjusted mortality rate is nothing by the number of deaths divided by the population at risk. Here the death rate is measured for a specific age group and hence, the term age adjusted mortality rate. In today's world, mortality rate is affected by injuries and diseases like AIDS. In addition, data shows that the older age group has the highest death rate. That is why it becomes important to standardize age when comparing death rates across different groups as some groups may have more number of people belonging to the age where the death rate is the highest.

Basically age adjusted mortality rate is the death rate that a population of interest would have if the population had the same age as the standard population. This method is often used to compare death rates of different population by have a control standard for age.
