Aging Dementia Personality Change

Dementia can be defined as gradual dysfunction of brain. Dementia is the most common symptom observed in certain types of neurological disorders such as Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, and vascular dementia, dementia with Lewy bodies, Huntington’s disease, Korskoff’s syndrome, AIDS, Fronto-Temporal Lobar Degeneration (FTLD) and Cruetzfeldt-Jacob disease. Persons with dementia suffer with restricted co-ordination between the brain, neurological system and other organs of the body.

Dementia is very common among people who are aged above 65 years. However, dementia can even occur among people who are aged between 40 and 50. The frequency of getting affected with dementia increases with age. While there is a 2 percent chance of having dementia at 65years, there is 20 percent chance of suffering with it at 90 years of age. The most common symptoms of dementia include loss of memory, inability to perform daily activities, irregular spatial and temporal orientation, loss of planning and judgment capability, language problems, mood swings, behavioral changes, personality changes and problems with abstract thinking.

Dementia can be predicted by understanding subtle personality changes that occur well before the occurrence of memory problems. Personality changes in a person suffering with dementia can be diagnosed through an examination of the mental and physical behavior of the person. These persons usually experience periodical recurrence of symptoms like anxiety, depression, delusion, irritability, abnormal mood swings, hyperactivity, paranoia, impulsive, visual and auditory hallucinations, short-term memory loss, inability to concentrate and stiffness of the neck. Other personality changes include decreased response to emotions, losing interest in life, lack of interest in hobbies and repetitive behaviors.
