Low Income Housing For Seniors Elderly
| Food, shelter and clothing are the three fundamental requirements for which every individual in this world struggles. Low income individuals are always deprived of shelter due to rising real estate costs and income which is insufficient to meet these rising costs. The problem is even graver for older people. However, there are various housing programs offered by federal and state governments for elderly people with low income.
Government funded housing programs provide support for low income seniors through either public housing or subsidized housing programs. Public housing scheme involves allotment of apartments that are managed by the housing authority in that region. Subsidized housing program contains apartments that are managed by a private landlord. Landlords receive subsidizes from the government in exchange for renting out houses to senior people. In this program, the rent is determined based on the annual household income of the applicant. Usually, the rent is 30 to 40 percent of the income.
The basic requirement for all these programs is the age of the head of household, which should be equal to or above 62 years. Apart from that, at least one member of the house should be a U.S. citizen or should be a legal immigrant. Members in the family should be limited. Senior housing usually contains of studios and single bedroom apartments. Area medium income is another important criterion that determines the eligibility of the applicant. Annual household income of the applicant should be below the average median income in that area.
Persons applying for such programs have to make a formal application to the housing authority. Depending on the priority list, houses or apartments are allocated. Preferences are determined based on different factors including homeless elders, people facing domestic violence, people facing discrimination, disabled people, war veterans and local residents.
