After a person has undergone a bowel cancer operation, one of the main questions that the person will have is when will he or she be able to get on with their normal life. Usually, after such a major operation, a person would need around two to six weeks to recover completely. However, the recovery period will depend on the kind of surgery done, the health of the person prior to the surgery, and medical problems the person may be having.
While it is normal for a person to find out when he or she can start exercising after bowel cancer operation, it is best to first consult the doctor. Remember, after the operation you will feel tired and extremely weak. This will last for about 3 months. But as time goes by, you will recover your strength and stamina. But even during this period, based on the consultation with your doctor, it is not necessary that you have to spend time lying in bed.
In order to facilitate your recovery, make sure that you have a healthy diet and drink lots of fluids. This will help with the weakness. Once you think you can walk a little bit, you can think about exercising after bowel cancer operation. Of course you will not be able to go to a gym and pump weights or walk the treadmill, but you can think of other forms of exercising such as doing some light work in the house or taking short walks in the house or around your garden. Make sure the time is restricted to short periods and you should take rest between your exercises.
If you were physically active prior to the operation, you should wait to get back to your exercise routine until your doctor gives a go ahead signal. The good news is that majority of people get back to normal exercising after a period of 3 months after undergoing the operation.
