Bronchitis is the inflammation of the airways in the lungs. These airways are the passages through which air enters and leaves you lungs. When the airways, also known as bronchial tubes, get inflamed, they produce thick mucus which obstructs the passage making it difficult for air to enter and leave your lungs. That is why people suffering from bronchitis have the characteristic wheezing, shortness of breath and cough with mucus.
So, should you exercise with bronchitis? While some people will tell you not to exercise because you will be exerting your lungs even further, others will tell you that exercising is good for your lungs. Exercising will help to strengthen the muscles of the lungs and you should do exercise around 3 times a week. It is important that you start out slowly and just exercise for a while. The speed of the exercise and the duration should be gradually increased. One of the best exercises for bronchitis is walking. So, plan to walk for 15 minutes around 3 times a day. As you get in better shape, you can increase the duration slowly, first to 20 minutes, then 25 and finally 30 minutes. However, make sure that you consult your doctor before planning or starting any exercise plan.
These light exercises to strength the lungs are known as pulmonary rehabilitation. The work towards building the strength of your lungs and usually you can get help from a respiratory therapist who will be able to design a exercise plan that is just right for you.
So, should you exercise with bronchitis? Yes, you should but the exercises have to be light and non-strenuous ones.
