Amount Of People With High Cholesterol

The American Heart Association has conducted studies on adult citizens and the revelation is startling. Almost 41 million of the populace has cholesterol levels above 240 mg /dl which is regarded risky while almost 102 million have the level at 200 mg/dl which is at borderline.

Bad cholesterol is an indicator of the risk the individual has in getting heart diseases. This needs monitoring and treatment for keeping the levels within tolerable limits since most citizens die of heart diseases.

Cholesterol is the fat deposition on the inner walls of the blood vessels which causes constriction of the blood vessel and eventually slows down or blocks the blood flow through them. Blood flowing to the heart carries oxygen. A stoppage or reduction in the amount of oxygen reaching the heart will cause heart attacks.

Since increase in the cholesterol level does not have any apparent symptoms, it can not be detected unless the individual goes in for regular check ups. Avoidance of increase in the cholesterol will keep heart disorders at bay.

The periodical test conducted for detection of high cholesterol is termed as ‘lipoprotein profiling’. The test is conducted after maintaining a fast for 9 to 12 hours. Some of information that the test provides include:

  • Total cholesterol level.
  • Levels of LDL or bad cholesterol.
  • Levels of HDL or good cholesterol.
  • Presence of fats in blood called tri-glycerides.

Total levels below 200 mg/dl is ideal; levels between 200 to 239 mg/dl is considered as border level tending towards high cholesterol and levels above 240 mg/dl are regarded high and risky.
