Foods To Avoid High Cholesterol

People who have high levels of cholesterol should avoid certain foods. They should also avoid foods which might not have high cholesterol but have the ability to raise LDL cholesterol levels.

Foods which are obtained from animals like eggs, meat or liver are high cholesterol foods. Fruits, vegetables, and whole-grains do not contain cholesterol.

People having LDL cholesterol close to the upper limit or already having very high cholesterol level should avoid certain foods like:

  • Saturated fats and oils: avoid bacon dripping, palm oil, lard and butter. Use olive or canola oil or soft tub margarine instead.
  • Limit use of partially hydrogenated vegetable oil or ‘Trans Fats’.
  • Avoid meat rich in fats like pastrami, steak, beef, hot- dogs, bacon, ground meat, sausages and processed meats. Avoid organ meat such as kidney or liver. One can indulge in eating turkey or chicken without the skin, lean meat, lamb, pork or fish. One can also include vegetables, rice and pasta in the menu. A maximum of 140 gms of meat, fish or poultry should be consumed in a day.
  • Avoid eating egg yolk.
  • Avoid milk which contains more than 1% fat. Opt to consume low fat or fat free milk instead. Also avoid cream, whipped toppings, most varieties of cheese or creamers.
  • Limit consumption of snacks like crackers, cakes and so on which are prepared using hydrogenated fat or oils. Use toppings and spreads sparingly.
  • Substitute butter and margarine on bread with olive oil.
