Snacks For People With High Cholesterol

People who are diagnosed with high levels of cholesterol often presume that this problem will forcibly keep them away from snacks for the rest of their lives. They believe that consumption of snacks between meals will be completely forbidden. On the contrary, such people can have the liberty to snack at least twice a day and choose to eat snacks which will not raise the levels of LDL cholesterol while assisting in increasing the HDL cholesterol.

Some of these snacks which can increase good cholesterol and prevent increase of bad cholesterol include:

  • Nuts: These are high in the fat content and have the ability to increase the HDL level and lower the LDL levels. Studies have revealed that 2 servings of nuts a day do the needful. Some of the nuts with low saturated fat are walnut, hazelnut and almonds. These nuts can substitute a snack. They can also make for a good topping, or can be mixed with smoothies. They can also enhance flavor of foods when they are roasted and sprinkled on top.
  • Pretzels: These are low in sodium content. They can easily substitute fried snacks. They are especially suited for people who might have allergies for nuts. They are available in many flavors too. They contain wheat, water, yeast and brown sugar.
  • Popcorn: This is low in fat and rich in fibers. One should substitute butter and salt with other shakers low in fat content in flavors like cheese or green-onions.
  • Other options include strips of vegetables dipped in low fat dips, vanilla wafer or yogurt with low fat.
