High blood pressure, also known as hypertension, is categorized into two types. These are primary and secondary, and based on the causes of the hypertension. Most people diagnosed with hypertension fall under the primary hypertension, which is also referred to as essential hypertension. So, what does primary hypertension mean?
It means that the doctor is unable to find a cause the disease. The doctors are not sure what causes high blood pressure in some patients and not in others. However, at the same time, it is important to note that hypertension is not an easy disease, as it is extremely complicated and is associated with several other factors, such as environment and genetics. A combination of all the associated factors ends up causing primary hypertension.
On the other hand, secondary hypertension occurs due to definitive causes that the doctor can identify, such as renal problems, side effects of certain medications, certain types of cancer and pregnancy.
Primary hypertension can occur due to drinking too much alcohol, stress, genetics, anxiety and even diabetes. However, doctors will not be able to pinpoint the exact cause of the elevated blood pressure. So, if a person is diagnosed with primary hypertension, it is in their best interests to follow their doctors' advice and take medications as prescribed by the doctor. This will prevent the condition from going from bad to worse and also ease the symptoms. One of the most important things that the person will have to take of is his/her lifestyle habits. This means making changes to the diet, managing weight and doing regular exercise. The person will have to reduce his/her sodium intake and reduce eating fatty and greasy food, while paying attention to consuming fresh vegetables and fruits. In addition, the person would have to do regular exercise for 20 to 30 minutes to help the heart beat efficiently and also reduce the excess weight he/she may be carrying.
The doctor may even put the person on medication, and the person should speak to the doctor about possible side effects. These medications should be taken in accordance to what is said by the doctor and should not be stopped without consulting him/her first.
Once a person is diagnosed with primary hypertension, the doctor may conduct additional tests to ascertain how bad the situation is and whether the patient has chances of developing some other health problem due to it.
If a person follows the regimen prescribed by the doctor, primary hypertension can be controlled and will not become a more serious health problem.
