Pain In Gluteus Muscle When Sleepling On Side

The Gluteus muscle is actually a group of muscles located in the buttocks. The smaller muscles that comprise the Gluteus muscle are Gluteus Maximum, Gluteus Medius and Gluteus Minimus. These muscles help our legs to rotate at the hips by turning the thigh bones laterally.

There are many people who suffer pain in Gluteus muscle when sleeping on their sides. Usually pain in Gluteus muscle occurs due to injury, strain or muscle imbalance. The Gluteus muscle that people experience pain in when sleeping on their sides is the Gluteus medius.

The Gluteus medius is a fan shaped muscle that lies partly under the Gluteus maximus. It runs from the edge of the pelvic bone diagonally until the leg bone at the hip joint. This muscle allows us to lift our legs to the side and helps in stabilizing the pelvis while we walk. When the trigger points of the muscle are activated, people experience pain lying on their sides. The pain will usually run along the buttocks and the belt line. A person will also experience pain while walking.

So, what can you do when you experience pain in Gluteus muscle when sleeping on side? Well, there are a few things that you can do alleviate the activated trigger points of the Gluteus medius and they are as follows:

  • Refrain from crossing your legs while you are seated
  • Do not sit for long periods of time without moving
  • Avoid sitting on your wallet as many men have the habit of keeping their wallets in their rear pant pocket
  • Try to massage the buttocks by gently rolling over a tennis ball while lying on your back or side
  • Take anti-inflammatory drugs to ease the pain
  • Now is the best time to start exercising so that you strengthen your muscles and allow them to get back into shape
