The physicians in sports, researchers and Arthritis Foundation have a common agreement that the pain and other related symptoms in an individual suffering from osteoarthritis can be controlled largely by regular exercising. This condition can occur in any joint of the body. The characteristic feature of this condition is the degeneration of the cartilage present in the joints of the bones. Previously this was said to be caused by the wear and tear of this cartilage. But recent studies have brought out that this is due to the destruction of the cartilage.
No cure is presently available for this disorder. It can only be treated for relief from pain and other symptoms using medicines and effecting changes in the life-style. Exercising the affected joint as recommended by the physician with using routines like yoga, cycling, swimming, and walking in slots of thirty minutes, five days a week will bring the desired results.
One should achieve the necessary stamina for the exercises gradually by increasing the duration by just 10% in a week. The exercise should bring the heart-rate up to the extent of little sweating but not up to the stage of gasping for breath.
One should indulge in foods which are healthy and which will prevent excess weight gain. This along with exercising will delay or keep the occurrence of osteoarthritis at bay.
On experiencing a flare up of the joint, one should change the exercises being done. Adequate rest to the affected joint post flare-up up to twenty-four hours will be essential to prevent further deterioration in the condition.
