Can You Die From Pneumonia ?

Pneumonia is a severe respiratory disease caused due to inflammation of lung tissue. A bacterium, Streptococcus pneumoniae is responsible for causing pneumonia in nearly 50 percent of the reported cases. Other reasons for inflammation include viral attacks, parasitic infestations and fungal attacks. These microorganisms travel in air through microscopic droplets.

When an affected person speaks too loudly, coughs without closing his mouth and nose or sneezes, these microorganisms are propelled into the atmosphere. When a healthy person inhales the infected air, the deadly microorganisms enter the respiratory system and cause pneumonia.

It can affect one or both the lungs. Certain harmful toxins can also cause pneumonia in people who are constantly exposed to the particular chemical. The condition is often mistaken with normal flu and therefore goes unnoticed. Asthmatics in particular are extremely vulnerable to the disease. People with reduced immune levels and the elderly are equally susceptible. The disease has a high rate of transmission.

Babies, older children and pregnant women are at a higher risk of dying from pneumonia than normal adults. Nearly 10 to 25 percent of the people affected by the disease die even after receiving medical treatment. Fifty to 70 percent of the population dies when they come in contact, are exposed to, or are in a very close proximity with the affected person in hospitals. The reason for such a large mortality rate is due to the occurrence of secondary infections like sepsis, meningitis and lung failure along with the disease. The condition can be treated with antibiotics if diagnosed at an early stage of infection.
