How Long Is Pneumonia Contagious ?

Pneumonia is a respiratory contagious disease affecting a large section of the society. Bacteria, virus, fungi and parasites have all been responsible for causing pneumonia in people. The severity of the infection depends on the person’s immune system, age and time taken for receiving appropriate treatment.

The disease is characterized by inflammation of one or both the lungs. Other symptoms include:

  • Unproductive persistent cough
  • Vomiting with blood
  • Chest pain
  • Abdominal pain
  • Fever and chills
  • Lethargy and tiredness

The disease can be transmitted from one person to another at a very fast pace. These microorganisms are released into the atmosphere when the infected person sneezes or coughs without covering his/her mouth and nose. The microorganisms survive in small air droplets released by the infected person. When a healthy person inhales this infected air, the microorganisms enter the respiratory system and affect the person.

The individual’s survival depends on how fast he/she can get antibiotic treatment soon after diagnosis. A persistent cough with body pain and lethargy for more than a week should be a cause of concern. Immediate medical check up is crucial in such cases.

In some cases, the microorganism can become virulent when the antibiotics are not administered or consumed properly. These pathogens take nearly two weeks to adapt and produce symptoms in the affected individual. In numerous cases, the person does not know that he/she is carrying the microorganism until his/her health condition worsens. A sudden stoppage of antibiotics will make the person contagious for nearly ten to 14 days.
