An inflammation on the gastric wall linings leads to stomach ulcer. A bacterium called Helicobacter pylori causes erosion of the outer wall layers by weakening the lining of the stomach. This causes exposure of the inner soft membranes. When acids or gastric juices in the stomach come in contact with the inner membranes, erosion, irritation and injury is caused to the inner layers. This, in turn, will lead to formation of ulcers.
Food plays a major role in alleviating the condition. If you are suffering from gastric ulcer, you have to keep the following points in mind:
- Foods that are extremely hot or cold like cold drinks, refrigerated food products, hot foods and ice creams have to be avoided. These foods will thermally irritate the wounded linings aggravating the condition.
- Spicy foods irritate the soft tissues, cause a burning sensation in the stomach and should therefore be avoided in the diet.
- Consumption of foods at regular intervals is necessary. Unwanted delay will lead to excess accumulation of gastric juices causing the affected layers to burn.
- Caffeinated drinks, alcohol and coffee have to be avoided. These irritate ulcers and delay the wound healing process.
- Small meals at frequent intervals will be better tolerated than large meals spaced apart.
- Dinner has to be consumed at least 3 hours before retiring to bed to allow adequate digestion.
- Milk, citrus fruits and vegetables have to be consumed in moderation. An excess can trigger a surplus production of acids in the stomach causing extreme pain.
Smoking will delay the healing process. Stress and tension also play an important role in increasing the production of acid in the stomach. Having a positive outlook towards life will go a long way in alleviating the condition.
