In 52 BC, the Romans took control of the city, but five hundred years later, the city was mainly occupied by locals. It has always been the seat of administration and hence, it should not come as a surprise when the World Fair to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the French Revolution was held there. To mark this celebration, Gustave Eiffel, an architect, designed and constructed the Eiffel Tower. The building of the Tower started in the year 1887. Gustave had initially planned to construct this Tower in Barcelona in Spain. However, the city found the design too elaborate and rejected it. As a result, Gustave took his design to Paris and built it there after submitting a proposal for it to the planners of the World Fair.
