Where Does The Mississippi River Start And End ?

The river Mississippi, one of the longest rivers in the North America starts its journey from Lake Itasca, located 2,348 miles from the Gulf of Mexico. This outlet of the river is man-made. A low lying bed of stones, built around the 1930s, has artificially shaped the initial course of the river Mississippi. However, the true source of the river is through the swamp located just downstream from the lake Itasca. From here, the 2,320 mile long river is joined by many tributaries and distributaries, the major one being the river Missouri in the right.

Other tributaries include St. Croix River, Illinois River, Rock River, Ohio River in the left and Minnesota River, White River Arkansas River and Red River in the right. Together the whole Mississippi river system runs through the whole or parts of 31 states of the US, including Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa, Illinois, Missouri, Kentucky, Tennessee, Arkansas, Mississippi and Louisiana. Starting west, it covers the Rocky Mountains to the Appalachian Mountains in the eastern part, moving north to the Canada-US border, including the Great Plains.

The mouth of the river Mississippi is the Gulf of Mexico, located at Plaquemines, Parish, LA. It is elevated at 0 miles from the sea level. It is a large warm water basin with depth of around 3750 m to 4384 m, covering an area of 600,000 square miles. This basin contains about 2,434,000 cu. km. water. Because of its position, the gulf acts as a very important point of connection between the ports of five of the south US states and six states of Mexico to Caribbean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean. Thus, the journey of the great Mississippi river, born at Lake Itasca comes to an end at Gulf of Mexico.
