When Did New York Become A State ?

When a person interested in American history comes to historical facts about New York, he or she will realize that the city was not an independent state in the good old days. The city was very much a part of the British colonies until the Declaration of Independence was signed. Once the Declaration was signed, New York ended up becoming a free state. In other words, it was no longer controlled by the British and was no longer under colonial rule.

New York was one among the first 11 colonies that were established by the early settlers, and it remained so till the American Revolution began in the year 1776. In April 12, 1777, over a hundred and fifty men claimed that they were chosen delegates for New York colony and actually went about adopting a constitution. However, there does not seem to be any documentation of these men actually being elected by the colonists to represent them.

New York remained as a colony of Great Britain for over a century. The colony declared its independence on 9 July 1776, and became one of the 13 states that originally joined the Union. The next year, on 20 April 1777, New York's first constitution was adopted. On July 26, 1788, New York officially joined the Union and became its 11th member. In the year 1821, the state's constitution was drafted by the wealthy and powerful living in the state. However, the constitution of the state of New York did not come into effect until the year 1822.
