Several famous personalities including many actors, actresses, comedians, choreographers, authors, novelists, sport stars, musicians, and even US Presidents have suffered from one or the other types of mental illness

Some famous actresses who had suffered mental illness include Ann-Margaret, Drew Barrymore, Gillian Anderson, Kim Basinger, Carol Burnett, Renee Zellwegger, Barbra Streisand, Winona Ryder, Joan Rivers, Rosie O’ Donnell, Jessica Lange, Leila Kenzle, Margot Kidder, Linda Hamilton, Mariette Hartley, Carrie Fisher, Courtney Cox, Margaret Cho and Halle Berry.

Most of these famous personalities have been victims of illnesses such as bipolar disorder, depression and stress disorder. For example, Patty Duke was the Academy Award winning actress who constantly complained about episodes of mania and depression, characteristic symptoms of bipolar disorder. Vivian Leigh, one of the finest actresses of Britain who starred in “Gone with the Wind”, died of obsessive compulsive disorder that caused violent mood swings, severe depression and uncontrollable behavior. She even suffered from a condition known as nymphomania. The ever famous Marilyn Monroe used to suffer from severe bouts of depression. Tracey Gold was an actress who always struggled with anorexia. Rita Hayworth was a wonderful actress known to suffer from Alzheimer’s disease.

The most important cause of mental illness experienced by these actresses is because of their upbringing during childhood. Most of them had troubled childhood experiences. Associated with these are factors such as work-related stress, lack of adequate sleep and excessive usage of prescription drugs. Some of these actresses were even addicted to narcotics such as Cannabis that can lead to mental and behavioral disorders.
