In the ancient times right until the 1900s, people thought that mental illnesses and disorders were on account of demons and evil spirits. The people who were mentally ill were regularly exorcised by priests in an effort to get rid of these evil spirits and demons.

And, we know today that it is abnormal psychology that details with mental illnesses and disorders. That is why it is interesting to know the effects of abnormal psychology on Christians.

There are many scholars and philosophers even today who are trying to relate the discoveries of abnormal psychology to the fundamental principles of the Christian faith. However, many people will be surprised to learn that the Bible recognizes the basic principles of psychological discoveries. A quote from the Bible -- "Train up a child in a way he should go and when he is old, he will not depart from it." This quote can relate to Freud's theory where he lays emphasis on the importance of childhood experiences as they are responsible for personality development and maladjustments in adult life. Today, mental conditions are treated holistically by psychologists and psychotherapists. They want to known about genetic influences, home influences and the patient's physical and emotional state. However, this holistic approach believes that the spiritual forces of Christianity do not play a constructive role. Therefore, many Christians are confused about abnormal psychology as it undermines their belief in their religion.

So, what is effect of abnormal psychology on Christians? While some Christians accept abnormal psychology, there are others who reject it preferring to believe that a person is possessed by demons and evil spirits. Some Christians believe that abnormal psychology is consistent with the Christian view of the world, while others feel that it is idolatrous and ungodly and rivals their religion.
