Culture is the complete range of human values, behavior and social structures that is specific to each group around the world. Culture is not just ethnicity. It also encompasses beliefs and values pertaining to religion, interpersonal relationships, family ties, politics and sexuality.
Culture also influences any beliefs a person or group has about causes and treatments of a disease or illness. This means that culture affects the way we view behaviors of others, including criminal behavior.
Culture determines what is normal behavior and what is criminal behavior. In addition, it also influences a person into taking up criminal behavior. This would explain criminal behaviorism. In criminal behaviorism, the behaviorist looks into the criminal's environment looking for reasons for the behavior. For example, a neighborhood with high levels of gang activity would reinforce criminal behavior in a person who lives in that neighborhood. In addition, the behaviorist also checks to see what experiences and stimuli the person displaying criminal behavior is exposed to.
When it comes to criminal behaviorism versus cultural basis, there is a big connection between the two. The cultural basis lays the foundation for criminal behavior. As explained above, the person's environment has a big influence on how he behaves and what he thinks is right or wrong. Therefore, when it comes to criminal behaviorism, it is imperative that the person's environment should also be studied to check for the reasons of this behavior.
However, no where within the judiciary system there is a requirement to check how cultural factors influence a person's behavior. Rather the criminal justice system uses the behaviorist to check whether the offender is mentally competent enough to stand trial for his offence. It is goes without saying that culture shapes a person's thinking and belief.
